xml

Excellent excellent tutorial here.

XML. Yummy. Why use it? Lemme count the ways
  1. Data can be stored efficiently as text files
  2. Data is independent of hardware or software
  3. More applications can use the data

Tips
  • metadata (data about data) should be stored as attributes, and that data itself should be stored as elements.
  • A smart, standard, portable, memory-friendly, solution should be based on JAXP 1.1 + SAX.

Terms to understand -
  • DTD - The purpose of a DTD is to define the legal building blocks of an XML document. It defines the document structure with a list of legal elements. You can read more about DTD, and how to validate your XML documents in our DTD tutorial. A valid XML conforms to a DTD. Use XML schemas instead of DTD if you can coz they're richer, written in xml, and is extensivle!!
  • DOM
  • SAX - memory friendly method to serialize xml on the fly
